A Balanced Diet for Your Horse

The Importance of Hay

Hay is a crucial component of a horse's diet. It provides the necessary fiber and nutrients to maintain a healthy digestive system and overall wellbeing. The amount of hay a horse requires varies depending on its weight, activity level, and the quality of the hay.

General Guidelines

As a general rule of thumb, a horse should consume approximately 15 kg of hay per 100 kg of body weight daily. This amount can be adjusted based on the individual horse's needs and the quality of the hay. For example, if the hay is of lower quality, the horse may require a slightly higher quantity.

In this example, a horse weighing 600 kg would need approximately 90 kg of hay per day. However, if the hay has a Verteerbaar Ruw Eiwit (VREp) content of 60, the horse may only require 10 kg of hay to meet its daily VREp requirement.
